Disover The Real London
British Museum
The British Museum remains London's most popular tourist destination. Kick-started in 1759 with a bequest from Sir Hans Sloane, the museum in Bloomsbury now houses seven million objects and is home to world's largest collection of arts and antiquities from ancient and living cultures spanning the last two millions years.
It's impossible to see everything in one visit - but you should try to see the Elgin Marbles, Sutton Hoo treasure, Mildenhall treasure, Lindow Man, Rosetta Stone and Egyptian Mummies.
Holborn and Tottenham Court Road.
Poet Percy Bysshe Shelley was inspired to write the sonnet Ozymandias after a visit to the museum's Egyptian collection in 1818.
