Anna Pavlova
Anna Pavlova, the prima ballerina for the Imperial Russian Ballet and Serge Diaghilev's Ballet Russes, was introduced to London by Victoria Palace Theatre owner Alfred Butt. Hence the reason for this glorious gilt statue on top of the theatre. This is actually a replica - the orginal created in 1911, was taken down in 1939 in readiness for The Blitz, and never seen again.
The Victoria Palace Theatre was built by the doyen of theatre architects, Frank Matcham, in 1911. Formerly the site was occupied by London oldest music hall, Moy's Musical Hall, created in 1832.
