James Greathead
James Greathead is one of London's forgotten heroes. As chief engineer of City and South London Railway, he created London's first deep-level underground railway in 1890. His Greathead Shield cut through the awkward combination of clay and sand to create what is now the Northern Line between Stockwell and Bank.
Greathead's statue stands on Cornhill opposite the Bank of England. It was sculpted in bronze by James Butler (1994). His statue stands on top of an air duct for Bank tube station.
