Blue Plaques
Blue plaques are memorial tablets awarded to the London residences of famous people. To qualify, the recipient must have been dead 20 years (or have passed their 100th birthday) and the building must be the same one as they lived in.
The blue plaques were first proposed by William Ewart MP in 1863 with Lord Byron being the first recipient in 1867. English Heritage is now responsible for the scheme's maintenance handing out 10 to 15 new plaques each year. There are presently over 800 blue plaques in London.
