Hanwell Flight
Hanwell Flight is a staircase of six locks that were built on the Grand Union Canal in 1794. The canal drops 50 feet in the space of half a mile. It's a surprisingly rural scene in the middle of suburban west London.
At the bottom of the last lock, it's worth double-backing on yourself and making a detour along the pleasantly meandering River Brent to see Isambard Kingdom Brunel's mightily impressive Wharncliffe Railway Viaduct that still carries the main line west out of Paddington.
