| Hackney Empire |
| The Hackney Empire is the finest example of theatre architect Frank Matcham's work - he was responsible for almost 100 new late-Victorian and Edwardian theatres including the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. The Hackney Empire was built primarily as a music hall in 1901 with the likes of Marie Lloyd entertaining the 1,500 capacity audience. |
After a dip in its fortunes, the Hackney Empire is now thriving after a £15m restoration in 2001, showing a rich mixture of opera, dance, theatre, comedy and, best of all, its brilliant Christmas panto. |
