Gants Hill tube station
Gants Hill tube station, built in 1947, is very much an architectural oddity among our gloriously eccentric Underground network. It's unlike any other station on the Central Line but, instead, closely resembles the stations of the Moscow Metro.
Why? Because architect Charles Holden, the mastermind behind many of the Central, Northern and Piccadilly Line stations, was inspired by the art deco Moscow Metro when he visited Russia in the 1930s. Take a look at Okhotny Ryad metro station and you will see the similarities. Accordingly the lower hall at Gants Hill is known affectionately as the 'Moscow Concourse'.
