Disover The Real London
Dr Johnson's House
Tucked away in a warren of alleyways behind Fleet Street is 17 Gough Square, home to Dr Samuel Johnson. It was here that he compiled the first comprehensive English Dictionary, finishing it in 1759.
No. 17 is now a museum devoted to the life and works of Dr Johnson. Saved from ruin by Liberal MP Cecil Harmsworth in 1911, it houses a first edition copy of the famous dictionary and several portraits of the great man (including this stain glass window). There is a statue of his cat Hodge on the opposite side of the square.
Blackfriars and Chancery Lane.
"When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford." Absolutely Dr Johnson!
