| Dr Johnson's House |
| Tucked away in a warren of alleyways behind Fleet Street is 17 Gough Square, home to Dr Samuel Johnson. It was here that he compiled the first comprehensive English Dictionary, finishing it in 1759. |
| No. 17 is now a museum devoted to the life and works of Dr Johnson. Saved from ruin by Liberal MP Cecil Harmsworth in 1911, it houses a first edition copy of the famous dictionary and several portraits of the great man (including this stain glass window). There is a statue of his cat Hodge on the opposite side of the square. |

"When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford." Absolutely Dr Johnson! |
