| D-Day Barges |
| Question - why are there concrete barges in the River Thames by Rainham Marshes? Answer - they were abandoned here after use as small pontoons to link the huge Mulberry Harbour from the sea to the land during the D-Day invasion of Normandy in 1944. |
| From here you can walk two miles along the gloriously remote Thames Path to the new RSPB centre in Purfleet whilst taking in the distant view of the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge. Formerly a military firing range, birds such as lapwing, avocet, little egret, ringed plover and peregrine can now enjoy the huges open spaces of Rainham Marshes. |

Rainham and Purfleet are both a long walk from the barges. Best to bring the car - there is a car park by the barges and in the RSPB centre. |
