Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace has been the officlal London residence of the British monarch since Queen Victoria. Commissioned in 1819 by George IV, it was built in Bath stone by John Nash and Edward Blore over the shell of the existing Buckingham House (built 1705 for Duke of Buckingham). Aston Webb added the now familiar neo-classical facade to the East front in 1913.
The 19 State Rooms within the palace are open to the public in August and September. Highlights include the Throne Room, Ballroom, Dining Room, Music Room and White Drawing Room. Visitors can also see the queen's carriages at the Royal Mews and her extraordinary art collection at the Queen's Gallery.
