Golden Boy of Pye Corner
The Golden Boy statue on the corner of Cock Lane and Giltspur Street was built to commemorate the Great Fire of London of 1666 - Pye Corner being the limit of the fire's damage. Many people blamed gluttony for the cause of the fire, hence the reason the Golden Boy is such a fat little fella.
The gilt statue was originally installed over the door of the Fortunes of War pub (pulled down 1910). The pub subsequently gained notoriety as a place that surgeons from nearby St Bart's Hospital picked up corpses left by bodysnatchers.
