Fortnum & Mason
Fortnum & Mason on Piccadilly is the world's swishest grocery store. It was opened in 1707 by Charles Fortnum (a footman in Queen Anne's household) and shop keeper John Mason, and quickly made a name for itself selling exotic food (especially tea) imported from the Orient by the East India Company.
Fortnum's is best known for its prized food hampers much seen during the Summer's sporting and social season. As Charles Dickens wrote of one Epsom Derby: "Look where I will.... I see Fortnum & Mason. All the hampers fly wide open and the green downs burst into a blossom of lobster salad!"
