Disover The Real London
Denmark Street
Denmark Street in St Giles is London's Tin Pan Alley and home to British music for the last hundred years. Melody Maker was first published at No. 19 in 1926, NME followed at No. 5 in 1952. The Rolling Stones cut their first album at Regent Sound Studios (still going at No. 4) in 1964, Elton John worked as an office boy at Mills Music Ltd (No. 20) and the Sex Pistols lived above No. 6 in 1975.
Music still dominates this small street: As a place to buy musical instuments (Wunjo Guitars, Hanks Acoustics, Music Ground, Rose Morris and Sax); buy sheet music (Argents); or listen to music at the 12 Bar Club.
Tottenham Court Road.
Rather incongruously there is a blue plaque at No. 5 for Augustus Siebe, the inventor of the diving helmet.
