Disover The Real London
Marble Arch
Marble Arch was carved out of Carrara marble by John Nash in the style of Rome's Arch of Constantine. It was originally placed outside Buckingham Palace in 1828 and shunted to its present rather isolated setting at the bottom of Edgware Road in 1851.
Marble Arch is very close to the original site of Tyburn Gallows where 50,000 unfortunate victims were hanged between 1388 and 1783. Large crowds would often spectate, so much so that a grandstand called Mother Proctor's Pews was built to accomodate the bloodthirsty mob. Today a small plaque records the exact spot of the "Tyburn Tree".
