Disover The Real London
Eel Pie Island
Eel Pie Island lies in the middle of River Thames at Twickenham and was named after the local tavern's favourite dish. Eel Pie Island has long been a centre for revelry: Steamers carried boating parties up the Thames for picnics and dancing in the Victorian era; and the Eel Pie Hotel was a much-loved jazz and blues haunt, featuring the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and The Who, in 1960s.
The hotel sadly burned down in 1971 and things are much quieter on the island these days. Privately owned, public access is now confined to a central pathway (no roads here). However the island stills manages to exude a certain raffish air.

The Kenwigs dined on a "cold collation, bottled beer, shrub and shrimps" on the island in Charles Dickens's novel Nicholas Nickleby.
