Disover The Real London
Cable Street Mural
The Cable Street Mural commemorates the 1936 Battle of Cable Street. In a deliberately provocative move, Oswald Mosley's 2,000 Blackshirts (BUF) tried to stir up anti-Jewish feeling with a march through the East End. 500 anti-Fascists and local Jewish residents confronted them in Cable Street. A pitched battle ensued, Blackshirts got the worst of it and the police ordered Oswald Mosley to retreat.
The mural, painted on to the side of the old St George's Town Hall in 1982, was inspired by artist Dave Binnington. A special varnish has been applied to help ease the eradication of pro-Fascist graffiti.
