Disover The Real London
Electric Avenue
Electric Avenue is so named as it was one of the first Victorian shopping streets to be electrically lit (1880s). Now it is the heartbeat of Brixton Market which is open Monday to Saturday and a very noisy, lively and colourful market it is too.
Brixton Market is dominated by the West Indian community who have colonised Brixton since the 1950s. Look out especially for the Caribbean food stalls selling blue fish, snappers, plantains, yams, guavas, chillies. A touch of exotica at bargain prices.
