Crystal Palace Park was created in 1854 by landscape gardner and architect Joseph Paxton when he transferred the centrepiece of the 1851 Great Exhbition lock, stock and paned-glass window to Sydenham Hill from Kensington Gardens. The Crystal Palace was sadly burned down in 1936.
In conjunction with the move, Paxton created a dinosaur park on the lower lake. Sculptor Benjamin Hawkins, with the help of Natural History Museum director Dr Richard Owen, created 29 stucco-clad dinosaurs that stalk the lake's main island.

Dr Owen first coined the word "Dinosaur" - the literal translation is "terrible lizard".
