Disover The Real London
Monument
The Monument was built to commemorate the Great Fire of London which engulfed and destroyed much of the City of London in 1666. Designed by Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke, it was built in 1677 as a single Doric column (in Portland stone) and topped off with a gilt bronze fire-ball.
The Monument is open to the public (only £2). You can climb up the 311-step spiral staircase to get panoramic views of London - particularly good to the north towards the Gherkin and Lloyd's Building.

The Monument's height is 212 feet - exactly the distance from its base to the source of the Great Fire in Pudding Lane.
